Elham Ruzbehi and baby begin their sentence

HRANA, April 28

Elham Ruzbehi (الهام روزبهی), a Bahai living in Isfahan, reported to Semnan prison with her baby on April 27, to begin serving her 2 year sentence. She is the fourth Bahai mother who is serving her prison sentence with her baby. She was arrested, with several other Bahais, on March 12, 2011, following a search of her home and the seizure of some of her personal effects. She was pregnant at the time. She was freed on bail one month later. She was sentenced to 3 years of prison, which was reduced to 2 years by the court of review. She has been living in Isfahan for more than one year, but has had to go to Semnan prison.

The names of the Bahai prisoners in Semnan were recently listed (in Persian) by the Bahai Azadi blog, along with photographs of the women prisoners.

    • thanks for asking Aunty Kamala. The charges were ‘propaganda against the regime, participation in a group, and undermining state security.” I assume there is a typing mistake, and it should read “participation in an illegal group.”

  3. Being sentenced for believing in one God and/or practising a religion that aims to bring harmony and peace is not a crime nor is it illegal. In our modern society, it is absolutely disgusting to see this happeneing in the world.

    • Unfortunately this is not unusual in today’s world. U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has just produced a report with a list of countries with the worst records on religious freedom. It reads like a lament for humanity:

      Burma, China, Eritrea,
      Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria,
      Iran, the Saudi’s, North Korea,
      the Sudan and Uzbekistan,
      Pakistan, Tajikistan,
      Turkmenistan and Vietnam.
