35 arrested in relation to the Azerbaijan earthquake: 4 Bahais still held

Khabar Navard, August 25

On August 23, 35 social activists who were hastening with aid to the areas in Eastern Azerbaijan affected by the recent earthquake, were arrested. The activists, who had volunteered to travel to the area, were intercepted by security forces and arrested. They included five Bahais: Navid Khanjani, Shayan Vahdati, Mithaq Afshar, Farid Ruhani and Vahid Khalus ( نوید خانجانی، شایان وحدتی، میثاق افشار، فرید روحانی و واحد خلوصی ). Many of those arrested have since been released, including Mithaq Afshar, free on bail of 5 billion Rials, but the remaining four Bahais are still being held.

[Because of a typing error in the Persian, and confusion about “long” and “short” billions, the amount of Mithaq Afshar’s bail is unclear: probably (32,000 euros, 41,000 US dollars is intended – Sen]
